Workshop: ‘Outside your Comfort Zone’ with Anne Kellas

A poet must constantly look for new ways to explore and engage with poetry, in order to develop and grow. This masterclass is designed to encourage the more experienced poet to step outside their comfort zone and go into the unknown, uncomfortable edge of their creativity.

This 3-hour workshop explores the importance of both silence and sound in the creation of spoken word--from meditation to magical editing, to the many possibilities of the vocal body in performance. Learn from a professional artist how to craft your words and free them from the page. Requirements: passion, patience, paper, pen, mind, memory and mouth.

Words on Water: departing from Tamar River Cruises, Home Point Marina

All aboard the MV Tamar Odyssey! The 2016 Tasmanian Poetry Festival Weekend kicks off with our traditional twilight cruise on the Tamar River.  This event features readings by some of our 2016 Guest Poets and the bar will be open for liquid refreshments.

Poetry @ The Boathouse

After the Cruise, make way to the Boathouse off Lindsay Street, Invermay (opposite Bunnings). Over a lovely pizza, listen to more of our 2016 Guest Poets.


This event will feature Open Mic sessions (5 minute limit) for poets in the audience to share their work.

Readings in the Park                         FREE EVENT!

Join us at Victorias Cafe, adjacent to the Albert Hall on the corner of Tamar and Cimitiere Streets, for readings by Guest Poets against the backdrop of Launceston’s most iconic green space, City Park. Visit the Japanese Macaque Monkeys in between sets! Or enjoy a lovely coffee and something to eat from Victoria’s, one of Launceston’s many fabulous cafes.


ArtWords                                               2 - 4 pm

Sawtooth ARI Gallery, 2/160 Cimitiere Street, Launceston.


A five minute walk from Victoria’s cafe, this vibrant artist-run space captures the essence of contemporary arts practice by local and national artists. Soak in the creative ambience while you absorb the work of our Guest Poets, shared in the midst of provocative, beautiful and possibly challenging artworks. This event will also include Open Mic readings for poets in the audience, with a five-minute limit.


The Launceston Poetry Cup                7.30 - 10.30 pm

It’s on! The Festival’s seminal performance poetry competition, now in its 32nd year. The Launceston Poetry Cup throws open the challenge to all who accept--if you can generate the single loudest audience response with an original poem performed in one minute or less, the silverware is yours! It’s loud, it’s contagious, it’s open to anyone and everyone and it’s easily the most fun you will ever have in verse! Sign up to enter on the night at the venue--write your poem now and give it a go! Light suppers available and drinks at bar prices.

Ploughetry!

Join us at a new Festival venue, the Plough Inn, 170 Brisbane St. Launceston (opp. Village Cinemas).


Hear from each of our 2016 Guest Poets in the gorgeous roof-top ambience of this recently renovated central Launceston pub.  Lift access is available and the Pough Inn’s Lunch Menu will be available for those of you feeling peckish, adn the rooftop bar will be open. This event will feature the draw of the famous Poetry Festival raffle and will be broadcast live on City Park Radio at 103.7 FM. Help us bring down the curtain on another fabulous weekend feast of contemporary verse.

‘Poetry and the Escaping Self’

presented by Chris Wallace-Crabbe


Does the poet disappear into his or her poem? Can art be truly impersonal? Perhaps the poet creates a marble monument out of language.

Is this done by formal means? Chris will demonstrate such questions by reading 

from his own recent and earlier poetry.
